Tools that I started using for Organization (That you should use, too!)

I read somewhere that you should start a new planner with a word. This word would be the focus and your drive for the rest of the year.

After seeing what has caused so many unnecessary hurdles in my path from becoming a successful freelance artist, I chose the word "Organization". The reason being is because previously, I had so many ideas and would have no true way to execute them nor was I able to comprehend how navigate the copious thoughts in my head.

I believe that it is extremely important to get better at organization as an artist for three reasons. Time management will improve along with a better understanding of the concept of time. Focus, undoubtable improves with organization. And finally, it's a form of stress relief.

In my first post, you see that I mentioned my goals on cleaning up my studio, re-organizing it and I am proud to say I've been making some progress. These are some of the tools I started with and I think you should too.

Planner: I bought a planner for the first time since high school. Dare I say, it's been a decade since! However, I was reminiscing how much I enjoyed my day planned out in advance. This provided a safety net and set itself as a reminder to not waste the precious time I was given.

My planner is somewhat of a rolling planner in the way that I use it. This means that I set out my tasks during the day, check off what I accomplish and move those tasks that I couldn't complete to the next day. I also set out my goals for the month.

This way shows me what a realistic day looks like and keeps me accountable especially when it comes to working on my paintings or commissions!

I also use it as a reminder to take time to sketch or draw from life.

For myself, I feel disappointed when I lose my day procrastinating or worse-in limbo.

I couldn't find the one that I bought to link but, target guys! I cannot walk in and leave empty handed!! (Perhaps, next year my word will be self control 👀👀👀)

Journal: My journal is simply a thought dump. I have a couple of journals for different purposes, really. I have a prayer journal, creative writing for stories and one for planning out my blog posts.

I'm one of the weird millennials that prefer to write things out first in pen and paper and then type things out.

My thoughts are constantly running to the next idea and it's noisy in a sense. Writing, along with drawing or painting, has been therapeutic since I was young.

My journal is almost identical to the one linked except, it's rose gold and not gilded on the pages not binding. I've got a bit of an obsession with rose gold.

Pens: I prefer to use colorful pens to break the mundane black and white text. I differentiate colors to signify categories such as urgency, commission work, appts etc. This is something that I still want to build on simply to train myself to understand the code.

Creative Markers: I mean, must I say much? Create a swatch for each color to then match with a category or make your planner pretty. Surprisingly, I'm not there yet. I know, ironic.

In truth, I want to focus on the more important aspects of my personal challenge. For both pen and marker, I use the Zebra journaling set which is linked.

If you are also on this path, I highly recommend getting a planner. I honestly believe that you will notice a difference.
