My Current Favorite Artists

Updated: Jan 20, 2021

Hello humans! I hope you're weekend was relaxing. I had a busy one with a failed attempt of trying to put up shelving in my little corner of the room. That's a story for another time, though.

I reflected on my favorite artists of today and thought I'd share them with you. As you will see, in this post we will only focus on those I follow on social media. I am separating this subject in 3 categories: Artists I follow on Social Media, Cartoonists and Comic/Manga artists, and Artists throughout history.

What draws me to an artist is based on what I feel like I need to improve on. The artists listed today will range from realistic renders to scenic backgrounds.

Ergo Josh: Ergo Josh comes from an architectural background but demonstrates a mastery of control and understanding of human anatomy. I love to see the way he shades and you can clearly tell where the light reference is. If you go to his Instagram feed, you're going to see a lot of pink! This is definitely his signature and I am all for it!

Katie Jobling: I am always in awe whenever I see any of her work. Katie has such a freedom of expression and her use of colors and her medium is melodic. It is pleasing to watch her content, too! When I'm overwhelmed, I will sometimes go to her channel and start painting with her and even incorporate some things from how she paints into my own art work. I can't help but feel rejuvenated and focused when I paint while watching her videos or, as you can see with the second picture, paint with her with gouache (I did not wait for the paint to dry at all 🙃). It's like that tingling feeling you get with ASMR videos!

Kesh: When I seek to feed my inner child, I look for Kesh's YouTube channel. Kesh's art feels nostalgic as his style is vibrant with color and it's cartoony. Kesh reminds me to let loose and have fun with my art. I'm reminded to allow my imagination to roam freely and playfully. He is very talented with a warm personality. Kesh offers up his own drawing challenges, workshops and more. I also recommend checking out his youtube channel. You won't regret it!

Laura Price: Also going by the handle LuluSketches, she is my absolute favorite artist! She is an environmental/background artist who's worked on Disney's Tangled the series and is most recently known to work with cartoon network. While I won't share any artwork from these artists here just to be safe, I cannot stress the level of excitement I get every time I see that Lulu uploads something! As far as I know, she draws digitally and somehow is able to incorporate so much texture which only enriches the environment that she's painting. I always feel like it's spring or summer upon looking at her feed and if you watch her content, it's a whole new experience! If you're not convinced to check her out, maybe her adorable Frenchie will draw you in.

Even though her focus is drastically different than what I draw or paint, I aspire to get to this level.

I hope you're able to check out these artists and feel inspired to create your own masterpieces!

I want to hear from you! Who are some of your favorite artists?

I love Bob Ross for painting because he took technical art and made it simple, and Mark Kistler for drawing. Take a look at his book drawing in 3D. Shows you everything about shading.
